Wealth Is Relative

15 Nov

What is wealth? What makes some people rich and some others poor? Are you rich or poor?

Well, it depends very much on the point of view: while a fisherman from Bali would consider himself rich if he had a boat and he could catch enough fish for feeding his family, the general manager of a multinational corporation would consider himself at the extreme poverty line if he owned the same things as the fisherman.

You know this saying that the richest man is not the one who has more, but the one who desires less. There are many monks who have nothing, but who don’t seek wealth on this Earth. They seek spiritual enlightenment via meditation and prayers, they seek for things beyond material, so poverty has a completely different meaning for them.

We are all born rich. Any free online fortune teller can tell you that. Children have their imagination which makes them the richest of all: a few rocks can be precious coins used for trading other collectibles, some simple leaves can be a lot of money, and mother’s smile is invaluable.

When do we lose this richness and become eager to earn more and more, to accumulate and to advance in our careers, forgetting to enjoy the simple things of life? Isn’t this making you sad?
