Entrepreneurs Know Profits and Cash are Different

18 Dec

Tip! You will never end up crying with Fast Cash Payday Loans. This is because if the company you have applied will not approve your loan, they will somehow send you list of companies that match your qualifications.

“How come there’s never any cash in the checking account?”

How many times have you asked yourself that question? You know the business is making money. The Profit and Loss statement shows a profit every month. You are constantly signing checks to pay the quarterly tax payments. Every time you go to the bank for a ninety day note, your banker agrees without batting an eye — just passes over the papers for your signatures.

And he tells you, “That business of yours sure cranks out the profits and it just keeps growing. What a gem.”

But where’s the cash?

If your business is growing at a rate of 30% a year, and your gross profit is 25%, you will always be out of cash. It’s amazing, but unless the business generates high profits, even moderate growth will kill a business. The business can survive only as long as it has sufficient credit to borrow money — more money each time it goes to the bank. But when the debt service closes in on the cash flow, any downturn in sales, or slowdown in collections, or increase in costs can stop the availability of credit.

Tip! ) Let’s say you have a balance of $1,000 on your credit card and you take a $1000 cash advance. Two months later, you pay $1000 towards your bill.

How do you increase profits? Raising prices is a good way to start. My barber understands the supply/demand curve as well as anybody I know. He runs a one-man shop and works only by appointments. When he starts to see new faces looking for appointments (more demand), he raises his prices. Certainly some of the old customers leave and try another barber but they soon come back (he’s that good.)

He’s also constantly improving his business by getting rid of problem customers. If you don’t show up and you haven’t called to cancel (causing him to lose the income for a time slot) — he just doesn’t have any time available when you call to make an appointment.

Tip! Revolving Credit Line. Establish a revolving line of credit through a lender to help you with potential cash flow crunches.

It’s easy to raise prices and increase profits when you provide a quality product.

You might create higher priced product presentations based on the same product or service. The fast food people learned this long ago. “Would you like me to super size that?”

Do you really think a Cadillac costs twice as much as a Chevy?

You could bundle companion features into a single product. “Would you like the extended warranty with this purchase?” Or, “So long as we’re here checking the AC unit, would you like us to clean the air ducts?”

Another issue that drains the cash is principal payments on loans outstanding.

This one caught me when I first started in business. The P & L doesn’t track cash or the principal payments made on the loans. The only way you can see these is to look at the balance sheet and note the loans payable balance decreasing each month.

Most entrepreneurs now make good use of the flexibility in terms available from lenders as they compete for good borrowers. I always made it a practice to negotiate an interest rate, an amortization schedule, a due date, and a pay rate. When I had these in my loan documents I knew I was in control of my cash flow.

Tip! Maintain a list of emergency money generators. These are items that you can use that require little or no planning, either because you have it done or it just doesn’t need it, that deliver short-term cash.

My partner for many years used to say that “profit” was a term created by the IRS so they would have something to tax us on.

Maybe so, but when you are starting out, don’t let the accounting entry under “Profits” fool you into thinking you are successful — check the cash.

Art Consoli held eight corporate positions with Johnson & Johnson before starting his first business. He went on to build over twenty businesses from patents or ideas or from businesses others couldn’t make successful. These ranged from starting a veterinarian drug company to taking over a steel fabricating company to developing the first manufactured home subdivision to qualify for every private and government assisted mortgage program in Arizona. He also did ten workouts for lenders and owners; the last was a $30 million, 300 employee, precision parts manufacturing plant that made parts for the auto industry. Consoli’s unique background and skills allow him to speak and write about how someone with limited experience can do a self-evaluation which will let him decide which business opportunity is best, how to evaluate opportunities and gain control over the one which offers the greatest potential and then manage that business to success. Readers of his book call and write to tell him how much his book has helped their lives and improved their business.

How To Get Cash If You Want To Open A Restaurant

18 Dec

This is one of my oldest dreams: to open a small, fancy restaurant, and to make it a cozy place for a few selected clients. I’m far from making my dream come true, because I don’t have the money, or the knowledge of how to run such a business.

If you have the same dream, and your only problem is financing, you could consider this solution for Restaurant Funding: ARF (Advance Restaurant Funding) can help you with a short term restaurant loan, even if your credit score is not so great. I believe such a solution is better than finding yourself a partner to bring in the cash. The partner would want a piece of your business, while by getting a loan you keep control and you can develop your business in any way you like.

The ARF application process is simple: all you have to do is answer 7 questions online and send the form. You don’t have to bring in collaterals for taking the loan, and if you qualify, you can also get a credit line, which in my opinion is the best, because you spend only what you need and when you need, but the money is there for you all the way.

OPM & Positive Cash Flow

18 Dec

Tip! You will never end up crying with Fast Cash Payday Loans. This is because if the company you have applied will not approve your loan, they will somehow send you list of companies that match your qualifications. For a long time I was reluctant to invest in a business that marketed a high ticket product or service because I didn’t have the money to invest. Even though I was convinced that if I was coachable and trainable and seriously worked the business I could generate a few thousand dollars in the first thirty days, I kept putting off joining the business opportunity until I had the money up front to invest. So I kept fooling around with MLM opportunities that marketed great products but never making more than a few hundred dollars. But finally the light came on for me about OPM (other people’s money) and positive cash flow.

If Donald Trump wanted to buy a business that he knew would generate him a serious positive cash flow, he wouldn’t use his own money. He would borrow the money from investors who were satisfied with a guaranteed fixed rate of return on their money, and Trump would keep his own money invested. I realized that if I borrowed $5,000 from my credit card even at 18%, it would cost me $75 per month in interest to use that money. Actually I talked one of my credit card companies to give me a cash advance @ 4.99% for the life of the loan. So the monthly finance charge would be about $21. If I wasn’t carrying a balance from any other purchases on that card, the minimum payment would be $100. So whether I considered the monthly service charge or even the monthly minimum payment, all I needed to generate from my business in the first month was $101, and I would have a positive cash flow. I was convinced that I could make 4 or 5 sales per month with the business I wanted to start and would be making a minimum of $1,000 on each sale. But even if I only made one sale per month I’d have a positive cash flow.

Tip! Maintain a list of emergency money generators. These are items that you can use that require little or no planning, either because you have it done or it just doesn’t need it, that deliver short-term cash.

I am a home owner, but if I didn’t have the money to buy a home, I would not live on the street. I’d rent a place that I could afford. Why wait until you have the money to invest in a business that you are convinced will generate a serious secondary income? Why not find someone who will rent the money to you? That could be a small business loan, home equity line of credit, credit card line of credit, or even a friend. If I hadn’t had access to a line of credit, I’m sure that I could have found a friend who would have loaned me $5,000 if I had promised to pay them $50 a month until I repaid the $5,000. That’s 12% APR. Or I could have found five people who were willing to loan me $1,000 for a return of 12% APR.

Tip! To save yourself from bounced checks, the fees for bounced checks can quickly total much more than the fee for taking out the cash advance loan.

Any legitimate business will have some up front start up costs as well as regular monthly expenses such as advertising. Why not figure the “rent” on your start up costs into your monthly business expense budget? If you can generate more than that amount each month from the business you want to start, you’ll have a positive cash flow in the first month. Go for it!

My Daily Bottom Line 1

14 Dec

I’m trying to get more organized, so today I innaugurate my daily bottom line: every evening, I’ll write down what I had planned for the day, vs what I managed to accomplish.

What’s left undone, moves on tomorrow’s list. If I do more than planned, I deserve a break next day, to do what I like. If you wish, you are welcome to join me, and post your accomplishments in the comments.

So, what have I done today?

  1. Planned: finish a website I had in work. Done almost 90%.
  2. Planned: clean the kitchen. Done – none. I’ll do it tomorrow.
  3. Planned: write 5 blog posts. Done 2, plus this one.
  4. Planned: wash the car. It snowed, so this was not an option. Cancelled.

This is it, tomorrow I’ll have to finish that website. Too bad I encountered a serious problem which I cannot solve with my knowledge.

I’ve never been able to execute a proper golf swing in my whole life. It is true that I tried to play golf only twice, but each time I failed miserably.

I suppose I lack both technique and practice, and since I know only one golf field nearby my city, and that is crazy expensive, I think I’ll skip it until more fields will open within the area.

Father Of The Bride (Movie Review)

14 Dec

A remake of a classic 1950 Spencer Tracy movie, Father Of The Bride is Steve Martin at his best. A fun comedy the entire family can enjoy, Father Of The Bride is great entertainment. When the daughter of George and Nina Banks announces her engagement, Nina is thrilled – but George has a difficult time handling the life changes that accompany his only daughter growing up for good. One of Steven Martin’s funniest films, this is one movie you won’t want to miss…

George Banks (Steve Martin) lives the perfect life. He has a great job, a nice house, a beautiful loving wife Nina (Diane Keaton), and two great kids. But George’s world is shattered when his 21-year-old daughter Annie (Kimberly Williams) returns home from college to announce she’s engaged. Her fiancée, Bryan MacKenzie (George Newbern), is a great guy, but when he puts his hand on Annie’s leg, all sorts of feelings and emotions erupt inside George. It isn’t her choice of a marriage partner, but rather her decision to get married at all that bothers George. He wants his little girl to remain a little girl forever, and he must now face the fact that he can’t control the changes in his ideal world…

Father Of The Bride offers a number of hilarious scenes as plans for the wedding go forward. Annie and Nina hire an extremely feminine male wedding planner, Franck Eggelhoffer (Martin Short), whose annoying accent and take-charge attitude continuously rub George the wrong way. Deciding to have the wedding at the family home, the Banks’s daily lives are turned upside down by all the last minute changes and typical pitfalls of an impending wedding. These comic sequences leading up to the big event are responsible for most of the humor and hilarity in the film (especially Martin Short’s character). But will the wedding go off as planned? Will George come to accept his daughter’s growing up? Or will she break off her engagement to Bryan? Father Of The Bride is a touching, romantic comedy you’ll never forget.

Steve Martin stars as his usual likeable self, utilizing great body language and years of experience in the comic realm in order to provide the perfect likeness of a father in just such a situation. Not too over the top, and quite believable in every way, Father Of The Bride stands in stark contrast to the comedies of today which tend to go way overboard in their attempts to be funny. Outlandish comedies have their place, but sometimes its nice to able to laugh without having to suspend your sense of reality first. Father Of The Bride does well in this respect – similar to Christmas Vacation.

Overall, Father Of The Bride is a light-hearted family comedy with quite a bit of charm. Steve Martin and Diane Keaton form a likeable married couple, and the middle-class family life projected by the Banks family is something with which most viewers can identify. Because of its feel-good, light-hearted humor, Father Of The Bride is a definite must-see movie… Don’t miss it!

A Personal Recipe For Happiness

13 Dec

What is happiness? It is hard to give a universal definition. Happiness is personal and relative. One’s happiness can be other’s disaster. You love your husband, your husband dies, it is a disaster. You hate your husband, your husband dies, it is happiness.

If I now earn $1,000 per month and I get a similar job offer for $5,000 per month, I’d be happy to take it. But if now I’m working from home, making $10,000 per month, I would be very unhappy to go to a normal job paid with $5,000.

What is happiness for you? Are you in search for happiness? Have you found it yet?

  1. It is very hard to find something you don’t know what it is. So, in order to get one step closer in your pursuit, you need to give happiness a definition. Make a big list with all things that you imagine happiness being made of. Make it really big.
  2. Be specific. It is not enough to write down “I want to be rich”. You need to figure out how much money you’d need in order to achieve the “rich” status.
  3. Prioritize and categorize your list. Split your happiness pieces in things that will make you happy now and things which will bring you a happy future. Each category should have its own priorities.
  4. Take the top priority in each category, and define ten steps to reach it. For example, if your priority was to be rich, namely to make $100,000 every month, write down the steps you imagine are necessary for you to achieve this objective: to build an online business which will be so innovative that people would love it, and they would become customers and spread the word. Opinion leaders will be happy to write about my business and they will encourage even more masses to join, so in a timeframe of three years, I’ll earn $100,000 per month from advertising and paid membership fees.
  5. Before starting pursuing your steps, close your eyes and try to feel your future. Do you feel like this path will satisfy you? Will you be willing and enthousiastic to work in tihs direction? Will you have intermediary rewards before reaching your final goal? Does your path have a soul?
  6. If your path seems to “have a soul”, go for it. Happiness is there for you, not only at the end of your journey, but all over it.
  7. If not, move on to the next priority on your list, and repeat the process. If working to reach a goal doesn’t make you happy, it’s probably not worth doing it, because in the end you’d be exhausted and you’d only discover that you pushed yourself so hard for an illusion.

In the end, all goals are illusions. The only material thing we have is the journey we undertake in the pursuit of our illusions. As I’m sitting here, writing this, I’m happy. My final goal is not to finish this article, I just started it because I wanted to clear up my mind between two difficult projects, but I found happiness in doing it, and I discovered once more how much I love writing.

I’m even happier thinking that my writing could be of any use for you, my unknown reader seeking for your personal happiness. Stop seeking! Look around you. Happiness was always with you. If only you knew how to see it!
